Senátor Ted Kennedy (Jason Clarke) z vlivného politického klanu sjel se svým vozem do vody u ostrova Chappaquiddick. Jeho spolujezdkyně, asistentka Mary Jo Kopechne (Kate Mara) se v autě ocitla v pasti a utopila se. Kennedy tehdy nezavolal policii, jel do hotelu, kde se opil, snažil se vytvořit si alibi s pomocí svého otce a zachránit tak svoji politickou kariéru.
